What Strangers’ Sight May Find
Friday 22nd July – Friday 16th September, 2022
The Katie Lindsay Gallery is proud to present new work by acclaimed artist Sven Sandberg.
Sven Sandberg has exhibited primarily in Ireland and the United States. He has received many awards including the Arts Council of Ireland’s Next Generation Artists Award in 2018 and was included in the 2019 edition of the Futures series of exhibitions at the RHA in Dublin. He currently lives and works in London.
In his latest work, Sandberg has produced ten new paintings which subtly draw on themes covering cinema, theatre, art of the 20s and 30s, photography and literature.
These are richly observed portraits characterised by a multi-layered poetic style, a fusion of contemporary issues and colours with art history, mythology, fact, and fiction. Sandberg mines his imagination and collective memories to create figures that feel part a remembrance of times past, part a gaze into the future.
Our current period of uncertainty is expertly captured by Sandberg with a darker than usual palette. However, these paintings are never without hope or warmth evidenced in the brilliant red colour of a coat, a red tie, an unruly hairstyle, untamed vegetation, or a flesh-coloured horse on a dress (the horse, historically, has been a symbol of aid to humankind). This all points towards the exercise of choice and the potential human condition to rebound.
